In the fall of 2017, I had the good fortune to meet a community college transfer in my Rhetoric 152AC class. Over the course of the semester, I was able to get to know him through meetings in my office, comments he made in class, and the papers he wrote. In the spring of 2018 he asked if I would support his submission of an essay written on Frederick Douglass to the American Cultures Student Prize competition. His essay was selected as the award winner for 2018. At Cal, we are fortunate to meet and work with students who have the passion and desire to engage, to learn, and to expand their perspectives. Nick Deleon was one of those students.
